Origins of the Deptford Shopping Center
At its opening in August of 1975, the mall featured over 150 retailers, including three anchors (Sears, Wanamaker’s, and Bamberger). Macy’s became the largest department store chain in the United States after its 1986 acquisition of Bamberger’s. In 1996, May Department Stores, the parent company of Hecht’s (which had rebranded Wanamaker’s as Hecht’s the year before), purchased the Strawbridge’s chain and rebranded it as Strawbridge’s. On August 1, 2001, JCPenney became the fourth anchor store to open in the mall. The building of the shop started in the year 2000. The Strawbridge’s store was demolished and remodelled into a Boscov’s after Federated Department Stores acquired May Department Stores in 2006.
On August 5, 1996, armed robbers broke into the shopping centre and attempted to steal an armoured vehicle. The gunfire at the scene resulted in the deaths of the gunman and a 17-year-old boy. The child who was badly hurt when she was hit by a ricochet ultimately succumbed to her wounds in the hospital.
In January of 2007, Macerich paid Simon Property Group $241 million to acquire the Deptford Mall. In October of that year, Macerich sold Heitman 49 percent of the Deptford Mall.
The mall’s two escalators and the steps at both ends and in the middle were removed as part of a “vertical movement” project that was finished in November 2012. The mall’s accessibility was improved by the addition of escalators at both ends, an elevator in the centre, and equivalent steps.
The entire shopping center’s flooring was recently redone. The food court now has a new children’s play area (in front of Jalapeo’s) and updated seating options such booths and tables. An up-and-down escalator will replace the current up escalator in the food court (opposite JCPenney). Previously, there wasn’t a central food court at Deptford Mall, but rather, eateries could be found scattered around the mall.
