Garmin Foretrex 401 Black Friday 2022 and Cyber Monday Deals: The Garmin Foretrex 401 is an out-of-the-ordinary GPS device. This wrist-mounted device lacks the feature present in some of the more stealthy hand-held GPS receivers, and it is not a true sports watch. Persons who are interested in lightening their load of backcountry gear while still having easy access to the device should give serious consideration to this option.
One of my Foretrex101s stopped working a few weeks ago, so I bought the brand-new Foretrex401 to replace it. It arrived in the middle of the week, and I had no issue opening the gpx file created by my Foretrex401 with Easy/ExpertGPS and Topofusion. Although the Edge205 and another HRM served me well, I had hoped to replace them with the 401 and the Garmin heart rate monitor for my mountain bike trips. The 401 picked up the HR data with no problems and displayed the results.
Unfortunately, there is currently very little information about the 401 on the Garmin website, and no mention of compatible software. After emailing Garmin about how the data transfer software and the spanner function in the Setup menu, I was met with the following quite uninformative response:
We appreciate your interest in Garmin International and your message. It is my pleasure to respond to your inquiries. But starting in the second half of 2009, the Garmin Outdoor product line will be supported on Garmin Connect, our online fitness platform. In the meanwhile, we recommend transferring work from those gadgets to MotionBased. There isn’t much in the way of Spanner documentation, unfortunately, other than the installation instructions on the download page.
The above response is completely unhelpful because it contains links that are no longer active and a weak Wikipedia citation. Despite the fact that we are well past the “second half of 2009,” the Foretrex 401 is still not supported on Garmin Connect, and the motion-based site has been essentially abandoned by Garmin, leaving the Foretrex401 effectively unsupported by Garmin beyond the rudimentary support required for data transport. To use the spanner feature, you’ll need a gpx file, but the Foretrex401 user guide doesn’t explain what it is or where to find one.
No department within Garmin is interested in fostering the Foretex401 at this time. It’s not apparent whether this device is intended for use as a jumpmaster (to provide a heads-up before an ordinance explodes), as a hiking altimeter/compass, as a cycling heart rate monitor/cadence monitor, or any combination of the above.
Smartly expanding upon the capabilities of the classic Foretrex101, the 401 has a USB interface, quicker satellite acquisition, and wireless data transfer. It’s a tad more compact than the 101, has superior strap attachments, and records data as a gpx file. The Foretex401 performs its intended purpose, but most consumers will be disappointed in the lack of included software, inadequate documentation, and nearly nonexistent technical assistance. There’s a printed quick start guide inside the box, but the manual is a pdf on the CD.
With some fiddling with non-Garmin programmes, I was able to list and view the Foretex401’s pathways, waypoints, routes, and other data, and even upload the data to GoogleEarth, as I indicated above. What Garmin calls their entry-level handheld GPS should be a lot easier to use and share data from.
