MSI GTX 1070 Black Friday 2022 & Cyber Monday Deals: GeForce GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 were recently released by NVIDIA, and they include the company’s new Pascal architecture, a new 16 nm manufacturing process, and GDDR5X memory. NVIDIA’s ability to keep the 1080 on top of the performance heap was a major point of praise in our launch-day review, and the GTX 1070’s ability to deliver high-end performance at an attractive sub-$400 price point was also a pleasant surprise. However, at $499, the reference-design card costs $70 more than the GTX 1070 Founders Edition, which retails for $449.
The GeForce GTX 1070 is powered by the same Pascal GP104 graphics processor as the GTX 1080, however it features fewer shaders (1920 compared to 2560) and fewer texture units (120 compared to 160). The amount of ROPs and the size of the RAM, both set at 8 GB, are both the same as 64. In contrast to the GTX 1080, which uses GDDR5X memory, the model under evaluation here, along with all GTX 1070 variants, makes use of GDDR5 instead. NVIDIA runs the memory on the GeForce GTX 1070 at 2 GHz to make up for the fact that GDDR5X offers double the bandwidth at the same operating frequency.
The MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X uses the brand new TwinFrozr VI cooling system and a PCB designed in-house. Both support a significant factory overclock, making them more powerful than the GTX 1070 Founders Edition while potentially making less noise. There will likely be more features available now that thermal throttling in the Founders Edition is no longer an issue.
